Helping Kids deal with TV sex and violence

Kids are likely to spend more time in front of the TV during summer months and so get more exposure to the sex and violence shown on the tube.

How that violence on TV affected children?

Of course TV is far from being solely responsible for violence in our society, but it has contributed to incidents of people resorting to physical force to resolve conflicts.

When a TV character gets what he wants through aggression, it may encourage your child to behave more violently and discourage him from objecting when he sees other people in physical fights. The message your child gets is that violence is an acceptable way of dealing with problems.

How does exposure to sex on TV affect children?

When parents hurriedly cover their children’s eyes or change the channel when there’s a kissing scene, neglecting to explain what is happening, they may only be making their children overly curious about what it is they are not allowed to watch.

Sex on TV is usually between two people who are not married or are having an extramarital affair. The message your child may be getting is that casual sex and infidelity are fine.
